Opportunity to Take the ACT Test for Free
The ADE: DESE is paying for juniors to take the ACT® test at school, during the school day, on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024. This test will assist students as they prepare for their future after high school. There is no cost to you for this test.
What are the benefits of taking the ACT?
The ACT includes multiple-choice tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science. The ACT matches well with the state’s education standards, measures what is learned in high school, and provides a measure of academic readiness for college classes. Additionally, the results may be used when exploring college majors, careers, and life goals.
How do students sign up for the test?
Students will receive a virtual Taking the ACT booklet, which includes a checklist for taking the ACT, information about sending and receiving scores, testing rules and policies, and non-test questions about the student that include both required and optional questions:
· Required questions: Identifying information—name (first, last, middle initial), date of birth, and mailing address—for ACT to generate and deliver score reports.
· Optional questions: College and career interests, including high school course/grade information, a Student Profile Section, and an Interest Inventory section. Refer to Taking the ACT to see what is asked. Students are encouraged to complete the optional sections to receive information on their score reports that is helpful for college and career planning, such as suggested college majors and occupations to consider.
Non-test questions support. Students will receive instructions for creating an account in MyACT, the website for providing their non-test information and receiving their scores. A session for examinees to complete identifying information and other non-test questions will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. Note: The Student Profile Section includes a question about religious affiliation. Staff will instruct students not to answer this question per Arkansas law.
How do students prepare for the test?
In addition to Taking the ACT, the following preparation resource is available at www.act.org/info-for-examinees: Preparing for the ACT, which includes test-taking strategies, tips for each content area, and a complete practice test.
Participation in Free Education Service: EOS
One of the optional non-test information questions is to participate in the free Educational Opportunity Service (EOS) from ACT. This service allows colleges, universities, financial aid and scholarship agencies, and other educational programs to provide information to students.
What are the benefits of EOS?
ACT research shows that students participating in EOS have greater access to information about colleges and programs of study. This expands their possibilities for future success.
Student information. Information about students shared with organizations participating in the EOS includes the following:
· Name, mailing address, email address
· Gender, date of birth, racial/ethnicity background
· High school, year of high school graduation, intended college major and occupational choice
· Information provided in the Student Profile Section and the ACT test score range
All EOS organizations have agreed to use this data only to provide targeted information about their educational, scholarship, or financial aid programs to students. It will not be shared with state or district officials.
